Why become a PhD student at the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France?
Research in Valenciennes takes place in a human-sized and multidisciplinary university. This environment allows you to participate in the specific subjects of the host laboratory or in cross-laboratory projects.
Research at the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France is based on recognized and practical fields, in direct contact with its social, industrial, and economic environment.
The Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France offers two types of PhDs:
The national doctorate – with a European label under certain conditions
The student carries out his / her research to prepare for the national Doctorate under the supervision of a teacher-researcher authorized to oversee research or of a University Professor from the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France, possibly in co-supervision with a Professor belonging to either another French university, or to a French public higher education establishment.
The doctorate can have a European label, when the student is preparing it in another member country of the European Union, during a stay of at least three months. The 3 other conditions for issuing the European label are as follows:
authorization to defend a thesis must be granted on the basis of reports written by at least 2 professors belonging to 2 higher education establishments in 2 member states of the European Union other than the one in which the doctorate is defended.
at least one member of the examination board must belong to a higher education institution in a member state of the Union other than the one in which the doctorate is supported.
- A part of the defense must be carried out in a language of the Union other than the national language(s) of the country where the doctorate is being awarded.
The doctorate in international co-supervision (decree of 06/01/05)
This type of Doctorate is carried out according to an agreement concluded for each thesis. PhD students conduct their work under the responsibility, in each of the countries concerned, of a thesis director. The language in which the thesis is written is defined and agreed upon between the contracting institutions. When this language is not French, the editorial staff is responsible for a substantial summary in French. Please note that conditions to pass a PhD are for some countries very different from those in France and require The Vice-President in charge of Research to review them.
